Limitations on attorney access for Cuyahoga County jail inmates a ‘constitutional violation,’ public

I couldn't agree more with the comments of my boss, Cuyahoga County Public Defender Mark Stanton. Defense attorneys are routinely denied access to our clients in the county jail. This goes beyond a mere inconvenience of the job - this is a serious constitutional violation.

When an attorney cannot have a productive conversation with a client who is in jail, the justice system comes to a grinding halt. This inevitably leads to extended stays in the county jail and cases taking much longer to resolve or proceed to trial than they should.

As a Judge I will do everything in my power to assist attorneys with access to their clients, including utilizing courtroom holding cells for visitation when possible. Efficiency and zealous, effective representation of criminal defendants will always be top priorities in my courtroom.
